Spartans Combine For 29 Runs In Doubleheader Sweep

COLD SPRING — The ROCORI Spartans remained home and kicked off a new week in the regular season on Tuesday, April 29 with a doubleheader against Detroit Lakes in Cold Spring.
In the pair of contests, the Spartans' offense put on a show, taking Game 1 by a score of 8-1 and following that up with a 21-1 victory in Game 2 to combine for 29 runs on the night.
In the first contest, ROCORI combined for 11 hits as a team, plating two runs in each of the first, third and sixth innings to breeze to victory.
Cal Heying went 3-for-3 with three RBI, a walk and a steal while Jace Griffin finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two RBI and a steal to pace the Spartans at the plate in Game 1.
On the mound, Max Fredin got the win with six innings pitched, giving up six hits, one run, one walk and striking out six. Reece Kalla pitched the final shutout inning in relief to conclude the game.
In Game 2, ROCORI went off for six runs in the first inning, seven in the second and seven more in the fourth inning to bring home an impressive 21 runs on 13 hits.
Heying once again shined, going 2-for-2 with four RBI and two runs scored while Caleb Maddox went 3-for-5 with three runs, two steals and one RBI for the Spartans. Nolan VanLoy and Gabe Sauza each brought home two runs, and both Jace Griffin and Zander Folkerts each added two hits and one RBI.
VanLoy got the win on the hill, pitching the first three innings and giving up just one hit, one run, one walk and striking out four. Grady Richards and Yaider Don Reyes each threw one shutout inning in relief to round out the game.
With the pair of victories, ROCORI has now won five in a row to improve to 6-2 overall and remain 3-2 in Central Lakes Conference action. Next up for the Spartans is a conference battle against Sartell on Thursday, May 1 at 5 p.m. at the St. Cloud Orthopedics Field in Sartell.
