COLD SPRING — In the first Saturday game of the season, the ROCORI Spartans welcomed in St. Thomas Academy to Cold Spring on May 2 for an afternoon contest at the Cold Spring Baseball Park.
In what turned out to be a back-and-forth battle, ROCORI came up just short in a pitchers' duel with St. Thomas Academy, dropping the game 3-2.
Nolan VanLoy led the way for the Spartans at the plate in the game, finishing 2-for-3 with one run scored, one steal and one RBI. Max Fredin added one hit and one RBI, while Logan Adams, Blake Kelly and Reece Kalla each tallied a hit.
Kalla tossed the first six innings on the mount, giving up just six hits, three runs, one walk and striking out two. Matteo Ruiz threw the final inning in relief, giving up one hit, no runs, no walks and striking out two.
With the loss, ROCORI dropped to 6-4 overall on the season and remains 2-3 in Central Lakes Conference play. The Spartans have a stretch coming up, hosting Becker on May 4 and Sartell on May 5, then traveling to Sauk Rapids on May 7 and Willmar on May 8 before capping off the week with a battle against Paynesville on May 9 at St. John's University.
