COLD SPRING — The ROCORI Spartans concluded a jam-packed week full of games by nonconference showdown with Monticello on Friday, May 9 in Cold Spring.
During the Spartans’ annual Alumni Night at the Cold Spring Baseball Park, where they celebrated and recognized the 2010 state championship team, ROCORI topped Monticello 5-3 to claim its 10th straight victory.
Trailing 2-1 midway through the game, the Spartans broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with four runs. That proved to be enough for ROCORI as it held off Monticello the rest of the way.
Zander Folkerts finished 2-for-3 with two steals and one run scored, while Jace Griffin added two hits to lead the Spartans at the plate. Jake Stalboerger and Cal Heying each drove in a run.
Max Fredin tossed the first 4.1 innings for ROCORI to pick up the win, giving up four hits, two earned runs and striking out one. Reece Kalla pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief, giving up just two hits, no runs and no walks while striking out two.
With the victory, ROCORI improves to an impressive 11-2 overall in the season, winners of 10 straight. Next up for the Spartans is a nonconference contest against St. Francis at 4:30 p.m. on May 12 at St. Francis High School.
